The Phrase That Stops Me Cold

The Assumption Behind the Request

What I'd Do Instead
If you're responsible for a fleet in this industry, stop asking for the best tires. Start asking for the right ones. Concretely:
- Pull the real numbers first: gross vehicle weight, average speed, cycle time, ground conditions, ambient temperature range. If you don't have them on hand, don't buy tires until you do.
- Ask for the performance envelope, not just the product name. A serious supplier will give you load limits at different speeds, inflation tables, and projected wear life for your application.
- Review your tire specs at least once a year. Your operation is changing; your spec should change with it.
I went back and forth for a long time on whether this level of rigor was worth the friction with procurement. It was. Total cost per operating hour dropped measurably once we started matching specs to reality. Customer satisfaction on delivery acceptance rose by 34% over two years, because the tires showed up right the first time.
