It started with a 36-hour call

The problem with Falcon model names
Searching for 'falcon' in this industry is a swamp. You get the Falcon 8X, the Falcon 900C, a peregrine (a bird, not a model), and a friend named Lisa who once asked me whether a peregrine is faster than a Falcon 8X. It is, but it can't process ore.
Most buyers focus on model names and throughput numbers. They miss the factor that actually controls performance: the feed.
The deeper issue: time pressure changes your baseline
When a plant is down, every hour of lost production argues for the fastest possible answer. That's not stupid. The problem is that urgency changes your criteria. Response time becomes more important than recovery, and a quote's tone matters more than its technical detail.

We delivered the unit in 11 days—a genuinely impressive feat. But the ore had a high clay fraction, and the 8X's fluidization water couldn't keep the gravity bed stable. It ran, but recovery was 10-15% lower than the lab had predicted.

How I triage a Falcon request now
So what do I do now when a mine calls with a dead Falcon and a ticking clock? I don't start with the machine. I start with three questions.
- What is the actual feed right now? Not the design feed. The ore that's coming out of the pit this month.
- What does the rest of the circuit look like? Is there a screen before the Falcon 8X? Is the pump sized for the Falcon 900C's flow? If the supporting system is a bottleneck, the new unit will be too.
- What is the real deadline? If the unit is already down, a refurbished unit with verified hours may get you running faster than a new Falcon with a 10-week lead time. (As of January 2025, this market shifts quarterly; verify current availability.)
This is the part where I have to be honest about limitations. I recommend the Falcon 8X when the operation has relatively coarse gangue, a stable feed rate, and enough water to maintain the fluidized bed. But if your problem is sticky clay or very fine liberated gold, a Falcon may not be the right answer at all—no matter how short your deadline is.
